Jury Finds Pharrell, Thicke Copied for ‘Blurred Lines’ Song “But I have to disagree” You decide!!!

10 Mar

Before you read the article I have to agree with Williams and Thicke’s attorney a person can’t own a genre (with that being said I can hear small similarities between the songs but not enough that it would convince me that it was copied) and all artist’s get inspiration from one another (I wonder if the Gaye’s were more upset they didn’t get asked permission or if they really felt there dads music was violated). Even Gaye had to get inspired from somewhere!!!

A jury awarded Marvin Gaye’s children nearly $7.4 million Tuesday after determining singers Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams copied their father’s music to create “Blurred Lines,” the biggest hit song of 2013.

Gaye’s daughter Nona Gaye wept as the verdict was read and was hugged by her attorney.

“Right now, I feel free,” she said outside court. “Free from … Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke’s chains and what they tried to keep on us and the lies that were told.”

The verdict could tarnish the legacy of Williams, a reliable hit-maker who has won Grammy Awards and appears on NBC’s music competition show “The Voice.”

He and Thicke are “undoubtedly disappointed,” said their lead attorney, Howard King.

“They’re unwavering in their absolute conviction that they wrote this song independently,” he said.

King has said a decision in favor of Gaye’s heirs could have a chilling effect on musicians who try to emulate an era or another artist’s sound.

Larry Iser, an intellectual property attorney who has represented numerous musicians in copyright cases, was critical of the outcome.

“Unfortunately, today’s jury verdict has blurred the lines between protectable elements of a musical composition and the unprotectable musical style or groove exemplified by Marvin Gaye,” Iser said. “Although Gaye was the Prince of Soul, he didn’t own a copyright to the genre, and Thicke and Williams’ homage to the feel of Marvin Gaye is not infringing.”

Gaye’s children — Nona, Frankie and Marvin Gaye III — sued the two singers in 2013.

Their lawyer, Richard Busch, branded Williams and Thicke liars who went beyond trying to emulate the sound of Gaye’s late-1970s music and copied the R&B legend’s hit “Got to Give It Up” outright.

The family “fought this fight despite every odd being against them,” Busch said after the verdict, which could face years of appeals.

Thicke told jurors he didn’t write “Blurred Lines,” which Williams testified he crafted in about an hour in mid-2012.

Williams testified that Gaye’s music was part of the soundtrack of his youth. But the seven-time Grammy winner said he didn’t use any of it to create “Blurred Lines.”

“Blurred Lines” has sold more than 7.3 million copies in the U.S. alone, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures. It earned a Grammy Awards nomination and netted Williams and Thicke millions of dollars.

The case was a struggle between two of music’s biggest names: Williams has sold more than 100 million records worldwide during his career as a singer-producer, and Gaye performed hits such as “Sexual Healing” and “How Sweet It Is (To be Loved by You)” remain popular.

During closing arguments, Busch accused Thicke and Williams of lying about how the song was created. He told jurors they could award Gaye’s children millions of dollars if they determined the copyright of “Got to Give It Up” was infringed.

King denied there were any substantial similarities between “Blurred Lines” and the sheet music Gaye submitted to obtain copyright protection.

Williams has become a household name — known simply as Pharrell — thanks to his hit song “Happy” and his work as a judge on the “The Voice.” He wrote the majority of “Blurred Lines” and recorded it in one night with Thicke. A segment by rapper T.I. was added later.

Williams, 41, also signed a document stating he didn’t use any other artists’ work in the music and would be responsible if a successful copyright claim was raised.

Jay Z Reportedly Announces Beyonce Is Pregnant With Couple’s Second Child

13 Sep

Screen Shot 2014-09-13 at 2.40.37 PMIt looks like the Carters are adding another branch to the family tree. Last night, during Jay Z and Beyoncé’s OTR Tourstop in Paris, Hov made the huge announcement of his wife’s pregnancy to the stunned crowd. According to witnesses, during his performance of the track, “Beach Is Better,” Hov changed up the lyrics to unveil the big news, rapping, “’Cause she pregnant with another one.” There is also a picture that has been circulating from the concert that appears to show the couple glowingly cupping what appears to be the R&B star’s newly formed baby bump. BeyHive members have been commenting on how Mrs. Carter’s show outfits have slightly changed as of recently. This appears to be the reason for the alterations.

Last week, the power couple looked happier than ever while vacationing in Italy, and have been all smiles in recent outings despite continuous rumors of an impending split. Hov and Bey’s first child, Blue Ivy, was born January 7, 2012.

Akon “Jay Z and Beyonce’s Marriage Feels Corporate”

5 Aug

Jay Z and Beyonce might be crazy in love or they might be headed for a split, but R&B star Akon says the fact they have always kept their relationship private is what has led to so much speculation.
Akon was in D.C. Monday and was super open to our photog about celebrity relationships … particularly Jay and Bey. What he says is really interesting.

Akon feels the mega-couple always presented their relationship to the public as more of a business than a real relationship. He says famous people need to be open with their fans about their relationships or else they invite the kind of rumors that have dogged Jay Z and Beyonce lately.

It’s an honest and refreshing take from one of the biggest names in music. Check it out.

Britney Spears’ producer William Orbit rushed to her defense after an unedited version of her “Alien” vocals — no auto-tune! — leaked online

10 Jul

Personally the way the media presents it “embarrassing, shocked, can’t believe it” leaves fans with a suggested feeling of dislike and after listening to it…its not Beyonce but its not horrible or to different from her auto tuned version….Im sure with all the right producers you and I would sound like Mariah….just saying!

The article below is from US Magazine….

Not even Britney Spears sounds like Britney Spears all the time. The “Work Bitch” singer, 32, came under fire recently when an unedited version of her song “Alien” was leaked online, giving fans a chance to hear her voice without the magic of auto-tune.

The clip is believed to be Spears’ raw vocals for the song, which appeared in its finished form as the opening track on her eighth studio album, Britney Jean, released in November 2013. Critics have maligned her unedited singing as “flat,” “cringe-worthy,” and “downright scary”—but her music producer says it’s not a reflection of the pop star’s true talent.

William Orbit, who produced the song with Anthony Preston, took to his Facebook page on Monday, July 7, to defend Spears against all the backlash, and to explain what it was that people were listening to.

“Dearest Music Lovers,” he began. “I have heard that Britney vocal link that everybody’s been discussing…I’d like to affirm that ANY singer when first at the mic at the start of a long session can make a multitude of vocalizations in order to get warmed up.”

“Warming up is essential if you’re a pro, as it is with a runner doing stretches, and it takes a while to do properly,” he continued. “I’ve heard all manner of sounds emitted during warmups. The point is that it is not supposed to be shared with millions of listeners.”

Orbit (who has worked with the likes of Madonna, Blur, and All Saints) went on to explain that a “generous” singer will sometimes “put something down the mic to help the engineer get their systems warmed up and at the right level, maybe whilst having a cup of herb tea and checking through lyrics before the session really kicks off. It’s not expected to be a ‘take,'” he wrote.

“Whomever put this on the internet must have done so in a spirit of unkindness, but it can in no way detract from the fact that Britney is and always will be beyond stellar!” Orbit concluded. “She is magnificent! And that’s that.”

Kim Kardashian photographed with ‘fake media friend’ Katie Couric

7 Jul

Screen Shot 2014-07-07 at 12.06.07 AM

Maybe a truce has been called. Last August Kim Kardashian publicly branded Katie Couric a “fake friend” yet they were photographed over the weekend at a party in the Hamptons reports Rob Shuter.

The photo which was shared on Kris Jenner’s Instagram site shows the 57-year-old Kardashian matriarch posing with Christie Brinkley, Kim and the newlywed newswoman. She captioned the snap,” Great night @kimkardashian @shellibird1@christiebrinkley @katiecouric ! #hamptonslife’”

Kim Kardashian was livid last year when she felt that Couric insulted her family and then sent a baby gift for North West.

The angry mother-of-one Instagrammed a photo of baby clothes and a note sent by Katie, with the caption: ‘#IHateFakeMediaFriends #MayIHumblySuggestYouNotSendGiftsThenTalkSh*t’

Couic had said of the Kardashians: “I don’t understand – why are they so famous? I think it’s mostly teenage girls that are interested.”

Beyonce, Jay Z Unveil Wedding Video During On The Run Tour

27 Jun

Six years after Beyonce and Jay Z tied the knot, we’re just now getting to see a glimpse of their wedding video.

The couple kicked off their joint On The Run tour in Miami on Wednesday, June 25, and footage from their secret wedding ceremony back in April 2008 was projected onto huge screens as they performed a mash-up of “Forever Young” and “Halo.”

In the clip, which was captured by fans and uploaded to YouTube and Instagram, we see Beyonce getting the IV tattoo she got in lieu of an engagement ring, as well as the stunning couple exchanging vows at their wedding as Jay Z puts a giant rock on his new wife’s finger.

It remains to be seen if the power couple will show more home movies during their tour, but at least now you can really justify shelling out all that money on tickets.

‘Think Like A Man Too’ Dominates Weekend Box-Office

23 Jun

Kevin Hart has proven to be a big time box-office draw for the second time this year with the release of his new ensemble comedy Think Like A Man Too, the sequel to the 2012 comedy hit Think Like A Man.

The film follows Hart and his friends, along with his friend’s wives and fiances, who hit up Vegas for simultaneous bachelor and bachelorette parties. As expected, things go horribly, hilariously wrong.

The film pulled in a solid $30 million in its opening weekend, already passing its $24 million budget. However, despite opening at the top spot, it earned $3 million less than the first film’s opening in April 2012, and $11 million less that Hart’s previous 2014 hit Ride Along which opened huge in January.

The Channing Tatum/Jonah Hill buddy cop comedy 22 Jump Street, another sequel, is still going strong, only getting edged out of the top spot by a small margin. It managed to rake in $29 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $111.4 million, far beyond its modest $50 million budget.

The weekend’s third sequel, How To Train Your Dragon 2, posted solid second weekend numbers as well, earning another $25.3 million, bringing their total to $95.1 million domestically. It’s still some way from its $145 million budget, but hopefully foreign sales will help in the future.

Clint Eastwood’s latest offering, Jersey Boys, a biopic about the legendary musical group The Four Seasons, tanked about as hard as most predictions indicated. It opened in fourth place, taking in only $13.5 million. However, its relatively-modest $40 million budget will keep it from being a total bomb. Hopefully it can manage to hold steady in the middle of the pack as an alternative for people who aren’t interested in the slew of up-coming blockbusters.

Disney’s Maleficent earned another $13 million, putting it in fifth place, and bringing its total to $185.9 million, surpassing its large $180 million budget in its fourth weekend.

The Tom Cruise sci-fi action project Edge Of Tomorrow dropped two spots from fourth to sixth and took in $10.3 million. Its domestic total now comes to $74.5 million, still over $100 million short of its huge budget, but it’s posted more-than decent overseas numbers and has earned an additional $218.3 million in foreign markets.

The young adult drama The Fault In Our Stars continues to tumble, dropping two spots from fifth to seventh and earning $8.6 million, while X-Men: Days Of Future Past follows suit, dropping from sixth to eighth and earning $6.2 million.

The Jon Favreau comedy Chef actually managed to climb back up a spot from tenth to ninth, a position it had held for three weeks before its step down the list last week. It earned $1.84 million. Meanwhile Godzilla took a hard fall, dropping from seventh to tenth and pulling in $1.82 million. And that’s your weekend box-office top 10.

1. Think Like A Man Too – $30 million
2. 22 Jump Street – $29 million
3. How To Train Your Dragon 2 – $25.3 million
4. Jersey Boys – $13.5 million
5. Maleficent – $13 million
6. Edge Of Tomorrow – $10.3 million
7. The Fault In Our Stars – $8.6 million
8. X-Men: Days Of Future Past – $6.2 million
9. Chef – $1.84 million
10. Godzilla – $1.82 million
